Neck and Back Pain
These are without doubt the most common reasons why osteopaths are sought out, and for good reason – so many of us suffer from one of them! 80% of Australians will experience low back pain at some point in their lives (1), and in cases it can be debilitating. In more mild cases, it can just be an annoyance for a few weeks, but nonetheless not pleasant to live with and there is a high risk of recurrence. Osteopathy has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for acute and chronic low back pain (2,3,4,5,6,7). Osteopaths are aware that even though many people have back and neck pain, that no two bodies are the same, and they use their experience in assessing the factors behind the individual case, and treating appropriately to relieve the symptoms and prevent relapse where possible.
In the case of more serious disc injuries, nerve impingement and arthritis, the osteopath will enlist more gentle techniques, suited to the state of the patient on the day and will advise further imaging or referral if necessary.
